8. Conclusion and outlook

Blind source separation, which initially met with some scepticism between 1983 and 1987, has attracted numerous researchers since the 1990s. Their appeal lies in the fact that no a priori information is required about either the sensor network or the sources, apart from their statistical independence. These techniques are proving highly effective in many application domains, such as radio communications, but they can be severely degraded in contexts for which they were not designed, particularly when dealing with non-stationary, correlated sources, or when the number of sources exceeds diversity. A number of adaptations are therefore necessary.
