By definition, loudness is the subjective intensity of a sound; in other words, it corresponds to the sensation of loudness.

For a pure sound of a given frequency, located in the audible frequency range of course (20 - 20,000 Hz in humans), the normal auditory system exhibits a wide dynamic range, between the threshold of sound perception and the pain threshold, the level above which not only is perception painful, but the sound is potentially dangerous for the cochlea whatever the duration of exposure. Between these two limits, the auditory system evolves in its normal element, which is quite astonishing when we consider that there is a difference of a factor of 10 6 between the pressures (or 10 12 between the surface acoustic powers)...
