3.1 Programming by PP programmer-tester pair
One of the most original ideas in agility is the notion of PP "peer-programming", with roles permuted according to circumstances. The programmer is at the heart of the AGILE process. There is a strong emphasis on testing, even going so far as to proclaim that tests must be carried out before code. We're delighted about this, as it's exactly what we've been convinced of for a long time (see the text of my inaugural lecture at the CNAM, given in 1994, Problèmes futurs du génie logiciel – l'informatique et ses limites ). K. Beck even has some very strong words to say: "you don't get to choose whether or not you will write tests – if you don't, you aren't extreme: end of discussion"; that's a pretty definitive position indeed.
