1.1 Basics of model representation: XML and DTD
XML's universality comes from the adoption of a simple syntax that represents one of the most general models of data representation: a hierarchy of elements, each element possibly carrying attributes and framing text. Thanks to this universal syntax, XML documents, which are in plain text, are easily transportable between computer applications. They are also relatively legible to the human eye.
Compared to HTML, XML tags describe content rather than presentation. In this way, XML separates content from presentation. The same data can therefore be used or presented on screen in different ways from one application to another.
