5. XML application domains

5.1 Cardinal virtues of XML

If we look at the whole range of XML applications, we can see that there are three basic types of reason to be interested in XML.

  • XML provides an almost universal method of external representation of structured information, standardized and independent of the computer applications that produce and use this information. At a given moment, this confers independence from tools and brands. In the long term, it ensures continuity in the face of technological evolution. In addition, W3C standard status guarantees stability, quality and precision in XML specification, and the availability of a varied and competitive range of software tools on the market or in the public domain;
