10. How IPsec VPNs compare with SSL and SSH VPNs

  • The SSL (Secure Socket Layer) protocol and was developed in the 1990s by Netscape Communications with the aim of promoting e-commerce. Its success was remarkable, given that it was free of charge, and it was quickly integrated into consumer web browsers such as Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer.

    SSL takes the form of a protocol layer between the TCP layer and TCP-based applications. SSL protects all traffic from telnet, HTTP, FTP and other applications.

    These SSL-protected applications are then renamed HTTPS, telnets, FTPS and are, by convention, identified by a specific port number.
