5. Example of an industrial reactor calculation

We are going to size a catalytic reactor using the velocity equation method.

5.1 Problem data

Unit type: double absorption (2 + 2). Sulfur combustion with air injection cooling between 3rd and 4th bed.

a = 12% by volume of SO 2 in the gas.

b = 9% by volume of O 2 in the gas.

x (%) is the conversion rate.

Production: 300 t/d of 100% sulfuric acid.

Overall efficiency: 99.3%.
