5. Conclusion
Polymer chemistry is a constantly evolving field, both for the development of commodity polymer materials and for the design of innovative materials with specific properties involving complex macromolecular architectures. New environmental constraints, notably REACH, have to be taken into account (e.g. limits on residual monomer content in polymers, bans on certain monomers and catalysts), and are all sources of innovation. The use of bio-sourced monomers, the development of new synthons and catalysts, and recycling methods are all contributing to the development of eco-responsible polymer materials. However, it must be borne in mind that manufacturers must retain the physical and chemical properties that make these products indispensable.
