4.1 Trays
Given the small dimensions of the pilot column plates, the liquid is perfectly mixed. Consequently, the Murphree efficiency of a pilot plate is equal to its point efficiency. The point efficiency of the industrial tray may differ from that of the pilot tray.
Speichim's pilot trays have been designed to enable the dynamic behavior of columns to be studied, i.e. the ratio between the volume of liquid on the tray and the flow of steam is much the same as in an industrial column. This results in an outlet barrier height of 10 mm, compared with 25 to 70 mm in industrial columns. As a result, the point efficiency of pilot trays is lower than that of industrial trays.
