 INTRODUCTION

In a tray column, material transfer is achieved by bubbling steam through the liquid in each tray to form a true emulsion. In packed columns, transfer takes place at the surface of the liquid without any appreciable occlusion of gas bubbles. The efficiency of such a device is therefore directly linked to the surface area offered by the liquid film.
