Among the advantages of the ionogels described here, some are specific to chemical ionogels, part of which is silica, but many are common with ionogels featuring other host networks, chemical or physical gels, with inorganic, organic or mixed host networks. This article describes the advantages of the subfamily of chemical ionogels made partly of silica, and highlights the positive effects of interface and confinement on physical state and transport dynamics in this case. Overall, this is a new family of materials that can be widely adapted to many solid-state applications, exploiting the properties of ionic liquids. Last but not least, ionogels can be advantageously biosourced, as already illustrated here, combining safety and durability for even greater eco-compatibility.
