2.1 Concentration polarization and clogging
During operation, membrane filtration processes experience a drop in productivity: permeation flux decreases at constant applied pressure, or pressure increases at constant permeation flux. This drop in permeability is due to the accumulation of material on (or in) the membrane surface. Two phenomena can be distinguished:
