2. Natural gas composition

The composition of a natural gas deposit is intrinsically dependent on the nature of the source rock [BE 8 555] and therefore on the geographical origin of the production site. As a result, the composition of natural gas produced worldwide will vary widely. After purification (removal of sulphur products in particular), natural gas remains a mixture composed essentially of alkanes and inert gases, with a majority methane content of at least 80% for most exploited natural gases.
