2.1 General oxyalkylation reactions

With the exception of reactions involving quaternization of tertiary nitrogen molecules, alkylene oxides react with compounds of the general formula RXH. The resulting molecules all contain an OH function that can react in turn. Consecutive reactions therefore take place, and it is impossible to obtain a single, pure molecule directly.
