3.1 Stability of bleach solutions

Even at room temperature, bleach solutions decompose more or less slowly, releasing oxygen and/or producing chlorate. It is important to remember that:

  • the rate of decomposition increases with hypochlorite concentration and temperature;

  • Decomposition is catalyzed by numerous metal salts such as Ni, Co, and Fe, present in trace amounts.

  • The optimum concentration of free soda is around 10 g/L.

  • Breakdown of bleach with release of oxygen

    The degradation of bleach with the release of oxygen follows the following reaction: NaClONaCl+12O2
