From 1845 onwards, numerous researchers attempted to reproduce the synthesis of natural zeolites: chabazite (CHA), erionite (ERI), mordenite (MOR), clinoptilolite (HEU) and others. These zeolites, formed very slowly (over several hundred or thousand years) by the low-temperature reaction of volcanic ash with alkaline groundwater, are contaminated by metal compounds, quartz or other zeolites, making them difficult to use industrially.
