3. Formulations for chemical defoaming and antifoaming

In many manufacturing processes, the formation of foam is an absolute prohibition. The industries concerned must therefore use chemical defoamers or antifoams.

In general, a chemical defoamer is a formulation that destroys foam: the aim is to eliminate foam that has already formed.

A chemical defoamer, on the other hand, is a formulation that prevents the formation of stable gas/liquid interfaces in the solution: the aim is to prevent the formation of stable foams. In practical terms, this means that the defoamer is added before foam is likely to form, whereas the defoamer is added when foam has already formed, usually accidentally.
