1. Synthetic polymers

The advantage of synthetic polymers is their good structural definition (homogeneity of functional nature, molecular mass and mass polydispersity), which is far from being the case with natural polymers. They do not present any penetration risks, as their high molecular weight prevents them from diffusing through the skin barrier. They are deposited on the very surface of the hair or skin, and are washed off with a surfactant and water.

1.1 Different types of synthetic polymers

A polymer is a large organic or inorganic compound with a high molar mass, up to several thousand grams per mole. A polymer is made up of macromolecular chains, themselves formed by the covalent assembly of a large number of monomer units.
