     INTRODUCTION

T his glossary contains definitions and explanatory notes concerning terms used in the context of research and publications in physical organic chemistry. Its purpose is to serve as a guide to the terminology of physical organic chemistry, with the aim of achieving a broad consensus on the definitions of common terms and the abandonment of unsatisfactory ones. As a result of the development of physical organic chemistry and the increasing use of physical organic chemistry terminology in other fields of chemistry, the 1994 edition [Pure Appl. Chem. 66, p. 1,077 (1994)] is much broader than the previous edition, and also includes terms from related fields. Some definitions have been modified, while others have been completely revised in response to comments from the scientific community.
