1. Defining thermal capacities

When a closed system receives, at constant volume, a quantity of heat Q V , its change in internal energy ΔU is equal to this quantity of heat :

ΔU = U (final) – U (initial) = Q V ( 1 )

When a closed system receives, at constant pressure, a quantity of heat Q P , its enthalpy variation ΔH is equal to this quantity of heat :

ΔH = H (final) – H (initial) = Q P ( 2 )
