In table 1 , the first two columns respectively give the compound's gross formula, with its state in brackets: solid (s), liquid (l) or gaseous (g). Compounds are first classified by the number of carbon atoms. Zero-carbon compounds, at the top of the table 1 , are the mineral compounds most often involved in organic reactions. The second classification criterion is the number of hydrogen atoms. The other elements are listed in the strict alphabetical order of their symbols: Br, Cl, F, I, N, O, S.
