3. Free space transmissions
Infrared transmissions over very short distances (less than 10 m), which have been around since the 1970s, are one of the main applications of free-space optical communications. Unlike guided transmissions, free space allows for non-directional links (point-to-multipoint links).
Examples:
Let's remember non-directional free-space optical transmissions with the first infrared remote control for televisions in the 1970s or the Hi-Fi remote control.
For directive transmissions, we must turn to much more professional applications at the end of the 1990s: optical links between satellites or between buildings for the creation of wide area networks.
