3. Main parameters, quality criteria

The scintillating material is thus a part of a detection chain. The wide variety of applications in which they are used lead to different performance requirements. Below are listed, sorted more or less by importance, the main characteristics often specified. Their impact on the whole detection chain’s performance is also discussed.

3.1 Time response

The scintillation time response corresponds to the time distribution of the light pulse resulting from the interaction between the ionizing particle and the scintillator. A number is often assigned to that characteristic in the data sheet. It corresponds most of the time to the so-called decay time τ when it can be expressed as:
