 INTRODUCTION

Summary

The optical modulator is one of the key elements in the development of optical communications chains in the silicon industry. Recent deployments have resulted in silicon modulators with very good performance of 10 to 30 Gbit/s. An emerging solution, based on Ge/SiGe quantum wells, offers promising characteristics for the realization of very compact structures with low power consumption.

Abstract

Optical modulators are one of the key building blocks for the development of silicon communication links. Recently, silicon modulators with good performances from 10 to 30 Gbit/s have been demonstrated. An alternative solution based in Ge/SiGe quantum wells is very promising for the demonstration of compact structures with low power consumption.
