1. How short-pulse lasers work

The short-pulse lasers discussed in this article are solid-state lasers:

  • fiber lasers ;

  • doped crystal or glass lasers in bulk state or in thin layers of varying thicknesses.

    These lasers operate in pulsed mode, using a material known as a "passive saturable absorber".

A passive saturable absorber is a material that rapidly blocks and releases the energy flowing through a laser cavity without the need for other mechanisms or electronic devices, such as :

  • the simple saturation of the absorption of the medium in question;

  • self-modulation of the resulting intracavity optical losses.
