The energy level diagram of the active ion is shown in figure 3 . The spectral transitions observed in the emission spectrum are drawn by vertical downward arrows. The wavelength λ in nanometers of the light wave (λ = c/ν) and the wavenumber σ = 1/λ are associated with the photon of energy hν by :
