The operating principle used for vapor-compression heat pumps is identical to that found in refrigeration production systems.

In the case of heat pumps, the energy used will be that available on the high-pressure side of the system, whereas in refrigeration systems, we seek to cool a medium by extracting energy from the low-pressure side of the system.
