2. Operating principles of wind turbine foundations

2.1 The normative design context

Standard NF EN 61 400 of June 2006 specifies the design requirements for onshore wind turbines. However, this standard provides little guidance on foundation design and dimensioning. For example, paragraph 11.8 entitled "Assessment of soil conditions" states that "soil properties at a proposed site shall be assessed by a professionally qualified geotechnical engineer, with reference to available local building regulations and standards".
