Numerical modeling of a geotechnical structure involves a number of stages, which are summarized below. It involves a series of choices and simplifications, which must be justified in the context of the study, and which constitute a modeling strategy.

Some of the elements of this strategy reflect a compromise between different aspects of the problem:

• the type of results to be obtained;

• the level of detail and precision required;

• the quality of available geotechnical data, etc.
