3. Corrosion fatigue cracking

The study of the propagation stage of a corrosion fatigue crack, using fracture mechanics concepts, provides an insight into the relative importance of the propagation stage in the overall service life of a part or structure [45] . This study is all the more important as, under certain environmental and stress conditions, fatigue cracks can propagate much more rapidly than in ambient air.

The quantitative study of the propagation stage of a fatigue crack is made possible by the introduction of fracture mechanics concepts and, in particular, the stress intensity factor K, which expresses the state of stress in the vicinity of a crack. This factor is of the form : K=σNaf
