3. Properties of flake graphite cast irons

The properties of cast irons are determined by their structure, which depends on a series of manufacturing factors. Chemical composition is just one of these manufacturing factors. As we have seen, other factors also influence the structure of cast iron, with consequences for its mechanical properties.

3.1 Factors determining structure and properties

Grey cast iron is produced in blast furnaces, cupola furnaces or induction furnaces. These different melting processes use different charges to obtain cast iron of a given composition.
