 INTRODUCTION

Standard NF A 02-005 has been repealed and replaced by standard NF EN 10027 Nov. 1992 "Steel designation systems", which defines two European steel designation systems:

  • ▪ a symbolic designation (Part 1) that replaces the old French designation ;

  • ▪ a digital system (Part 2) which is a simplified designation.

The rules defined by this European standard must be applied to designate steels listed in European and national standards; they can also be applied to designate steels which are not standardized. However, the assignment of designations is reserved:

  • the Technical Committees of ECISS (European Committee for Iron and Steel Standardization) for steels specified by European standards;

  • national standards bodies for steels specified by national standards and other steels.

For this reason, the description of these designation systems is essentially oriented towards their reading and interpretation.
