2. Hot forming of semi-finished products

Generally speaking, all conventional hot forming processes are potentially applicable to Zr and Hf alloys. For the purposes of this article, we will confine ourselves to the processes used in the nuclear industry to manufacture the components that make up fuel assemblies.

2.1 Forging (bars and beams)

The forging operation is common to all Zr and Hf products (tubes, bars and flat products), and enables ingots to be shaped for subsequent operations (extrusion or hot rolling).
