1. Background and applications

Platinum (Pt) and the platinoids (rhodium (Rh), palladium (Pd), ruthenium (Ru), osmium (Os), and iridium (Ir)) are noble metals. They belong to group VIII of the periodic table.

As mentioned in the previous file [M 1 625] , the standard potentials of redox couples involving platinum and platinoids are higher than those of common metals, giving them very interesting physicochemical properties, particularly in terms of resistance to corrosion, both atmospheric and in aqueous environments.
