3. Thermal and metallurgical limitations of this type of treatment

In order to simultaneously obtain the desired hardness, microstructure and residual stress profiles in the treated zones, it is necessary to be able to predict, on the one hand, the thermal cycles as a function of surface power, heating time and hardening severity and, on the other hand, the structural consequences of these cycles as a function of the hardenability of the steel used.
