4. Heat treatment incidents and remedies

During the heat treatment of tools, a number of incidents can occur which lead to the part being scrapped, or to inadequate performance in service. These include tapping, excessive deformation, excessive brittleness and variations in the composition of the surface layers of the treated part, especially through decarburization.

4.1 Tapestries

Tapping is cracking that occurs during the quenching process, when the cooling rate is rapid and the steel not very ductile.
