 INTRODUCTION

Although ingot casting in ingot moulds has already been largely superseded by continuous casting, whose advantages in terms of setting and automation are decisive, there are still cases where the ingot route may still be necessary for :

  • satisfying restricted markets;

  • remedy limitations in financial capacity or access to foreign currencies ;

  • help a saturated continuous casting ;

  • respond to a shortage of qualified personnel, etc.

Far from claiming to be exhaustive, this document is more of a form than a methodical presentation, and its sole ambition is to provide useful data and basic information on small and medium-sized calcined ingots and their ingot moulds.

As is common practice in the industry, the percentages quoted in this article are mass percentages, unless otherwise specified. For the sake of correctness, the word "weight" has been replaced by "mass".
