In addition to a brief history, we will review the principles and the metallurgical and economic characteristics of this method, before focusing on the now essential aspects of its impact on the environment and possible future developments. For example, gas recycling and oxygen injection are designed to improve the technique's position in relation to its competitor, pellet sintering.
