After noting the impressive worldwide development of iron ore sintering processes, we will examine the reasons for such growth before making a few general comments on their evolution.

Table 1 concerns sintering (i.e. "sinter" production) from 1955 to 1995, a period for which precise statistical data are available, showing the impressive growth of this technique in the post-war period, mainly in the "old industrial countries", both in the West (North America, Europe and Japan) and in the East (USSR and Eastern Europe).
