4. Economic data on production costs

Before examining the evolution of iron ore prices, we need to understand the main components of their production costs. To do this, let's review them in turn:

  • extraction costs, i.e. mining costs;

  • raw ore preparation costs ;

  • all FOB costs, i.e. at the exit of all mining facilities;

  • transportation costs.

4.1 Extraction costs

It should be noted straight away that, with a few exceptions – the case of the Swedish LKAB iron mines being one of the most notorious – the vast majority of the world's iron mines are open-cast.
