8. Safety and environment
Zinc is essential for the metabolism of living organisms. It is indispensable for the proper functioning of the immune system, and plays an essential role in cell division and wound healing, either as an activator or as a component of the various enzymes involved in human metabolism.
The daily requirement for a man over the age of 14 is estimated at around 11 mg/day (9 mg/day for adult women). These requirements obviously vary from one individual to another, depending on weight, age, sex, etc.
Food is the main source of zinc for human beings, with only a small portion coming from drinking water. Foods vary in their zinc content. The main sources of zinc in the diet are red meat, poultry, fish, seafood, wholegrain cereals and dairy products.
