5. Performance and controls

Paints are generally applied to aluminum at a thickness of between 20 and 25 µm, primers and reverse coatings at between 3 and 5 µm. These coatings can have a more or less glossy or matte appearance, depending on their use: for example, bodywork is in the high-gloss range, construction in the semi-gloss and satin range, and ceilings in the matte range. A relatively recent evolution in paint appearance has been towards structured or grained lacquers. The slight relief of their surface gives them a pleasing appearance and excellent resistance to abrasion: hence their obvious destination for roller shutters, which subject pre-painted aluminum to severe friction during movement. Pre-painted aluminum sheet can be subjected to the main deformations imposed by customers (cutting, engraving, roll-forming, press-bending and even stamping).
