2. Definition of "biolubricant

The prefix "bio" is applied to various subjects: "bio-based, bio-genic, bio-sourced, bio-compatible, bio-degradable" or "eco" as a synonym. Already, the multitude of terms used indicates that biolubricants are not legally defined. The following is a non-exhaustive list of synonyms proposed or not by the various existing standards:

  • EAL stands for Environmentally Acceptable Lubricant. The VGP (Vessel General Permit) also includes the term "environmentally friendly lubricants";

  • ECL for Environmentally Compatible/Considered Lubricant ;

  • hydraulic fluids for environmental impact (ASTM D6046, see also ASTM D6006) ;

  • biolubricant (see EN 16807) ;

  • biodegradable fire resistant hydraulics fluids (ASTM D7044 limited to...
