4. Conclusions

The aim of this article was to present a brief overview of the current state of knowledge on pavement skid resistance. Considered a field of study and research specific to road engineers, skid resistance can also be approached from a tribological angle, since it involves friction, lubrication and wear phenomena.

4.1 Things to remember

Grip and friction result from tire deformation and the molecular bonds between the tire and the road surface. They depend on the way the tire glides over the road surface during acceleration or braking. Contaminants (water, snow or ice) act as a lubricant in the tire/road interface, considerably reducing friction. The lubricating action is amplified by speed and, in winter conditions, by air heating which promotes the surface...
