2. Adhesive energy: the driving force behind direct bonding

For the adhesion energy to be non-zero and positive, at least one attractive force must be established between the two surfaces to be joined. This is the case, for example, if the two surfaces are north and south permanent magnets: the two surfaces join spontaneously. Spontaneous assembly can also be achieved with electrostatic forces, if two charged surfaces are brought face to face. This is part of the phenomenon involved in anodic bonding
