2.1 Metal alloys: structural materials for hydrogen transport and storage
Today, low-alloy steels are the materials of choice for transporting hydrogen gas. However, they are potentially susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement (HE), which manifests itself mainly as a drop in ductility and toughness, as well as accelerated crack propagation under cyclic loading. Hydrogen embrittlement of steels is highly dependent on their chemical composition, microstructure and hydrogen loading conditions.
