2. Changes in slag composition and refractory corrosion conditions during the steelmaking process
The types of refractories used vary throughout the steelmaking process, depending on the typical composition of the slag and the temperature levels in the successive furnaces and equipment, from the blast furnace to the continuous casting line.
We will review the conditions encountered during the main stages of the process and examine how the major families of refractories are affected: alumina, magnesia, an andalusite-based alumina refractory composition (60% Al 2 O 3 , 40% SiO 2 ), and a dolomite composition (55% CaO, 45% MgO).
