1. General Description of Corrosion of Refractories by Steel Slag

The objective here is to present the various mechanisms of refractory corrosion by slag: the dissolution of refractory oxides, the capillary infiltration of slag into the pores, the erosion of the surface of the altered refractory, and, conversely, the protection of the surface through the precipitation of new phases or the deposition of slag. This review of mechanisms and parameters is illustrated by industrial and laboratory examples.

Note:

In the steel industry, concentrations (the proportion of a solute in a solution) are always expressed by weight. Unless otherwise specified in this article, “%” alone refers to weight percent. The porosity of refractories is expressed as a percentage by volume, which is the ratio of the volume of the pores to the total volume of the refractory.
