2. Why weight database values?

Assessing risks as accurately as possible is now a priority, because overestimating risks can have consequences for the cost of installations (due to the need to install safety devices that may not be justified in view of the risks involved). On the other hand, under-assessing risks can lead to major accidents that are highly damaging.

With the emergence of quantitative risk analysis, the use of data banks is essential. However, the question arises as to how best to use these databases.

Using the leak frequencies reported by EGIG 6th to quantify the frequency of leaks on a gas transmission pipeline is not a priori problematic, since the values reported in this database are specific to this sector of activity (cf. Études des dangers : Quelles banques de données ?
