4. What kind of decisions should be made to improve the system?

As well as alerting us to truly abnormal variations, the theory of variations guides us as to the nature of the decisions we need to take to improve a process or system. As mentioned above, these can be of two kinds.

4.1 Variation is abnormal

A particular cause (also called special or assignable) must be sought. The measure is often an aggregation (sum or average) of the various data collected during the observation period. A first analysis can be made by detailing these different data.
